Second Quarter Report Cards - do you need help?

The second quarter report cards are about to come out and fear and dread are some of the emotions that many students and parents are feeling right now. Now that the entire first half of the school year is complete, you may not be sure if your child even has a hope of passing the class. In addition to talking to the school about what is going on, you can look to the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville to help you and your child achieve academic success!

There are many factors that contribute to less than acceptable grades like lack of knowledge, lack of discipline, lack of self-confidence, lack of hope, lack of a sense of urgency, and the list can go on.  In the meantime, your child struggles with homework, says they hate school, and just doesn't seem to care. What is a parent to do??

We can assure you, we are familiar with this scenario. It plays out over and over with students and parents that come to us for help.  And the best news is, we can and do help!

We will test your child to see where their strengths and weaknesses are and will then design a custom curriculum for them, based on what they need the most help on. We then fill those learning gaps while at the same time, help them with homework and teach them how to do it independently. We build confidence and self-esteem in  your child and equip them with tools to take charge of their education and learning. It's a remarkable change and one that will allow you to begin to see more good grades and offer praise and rewards!

So don't delay - get out of the rut and allow us to do what we do best!  Call us at the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville right now at 268-8556 to get started so the next report card is better!

Tips to Help Your Child Make New Friends

It doesn’t matter what grade your child is in - making new friends can be hard.  If your child is attending a new school, it’s natural to be nervous. Some kids believe the more friends you have, the more popular you are.  The truth is, a child only needs one or two close friends to gain self-esteem and a sense of belonging.

Here are some tips to share with your child to help them make new friends – good friends – at school.

Take a deep breath.
Keep things in perspective: you're going to a new school where there will be lots of kids your age. One good strategy is to find other kids who are new to the school. You’ll have this unfamiliar environment in common, with lots to talk about (comparing your classes and the teachers, doing homework assignments, and selecting extracurricular activities).

Take the first step.
Be open to meeting new people who are different from you - the school will have kids from all different cultures and backgrounds. Keep your head up, and make eye contact with other people. Introduce yourself (to other kids and to adults) and remember that your smile will help make introductions easier. Try to sit in the middle of the class where you have people all around and you can make conversation. You can ask a question (Do you know if the cafeteria food is any good?), talk about the school (I heard they have a great softball team), or offer a compliment (I really like your shoes!) to get a conversation started.

Get involved.
Probably the best strategy to make new friends is to pursue your own interests. Take part in the after-school activities you like.  Join the choir, try out for the team, or be part of the Drama club! You’ll meet lots of people with different personalities and share a common interest with everyone in the group.

Practice the golden rule.
Remember?  Treat others as you want to be treated yourself.  Show kindness and respect toward everyone you meet, and don't judge others before you get to know them. Do nice things because you want to, and not because you need to. Help pick up books dropped on the floor.  Save a seat.  Pay a compliment.  Everyone appreciates kindness.

Be yourself.
Stay true to who you are.  Don’t fake an interest or change yourself to try to fit in with a particular group. Anyone who doesn’t accept you for you won’t be a real friend.  If you approach others authentically, you will attract people who want to connect with you, and you’ll find your future true friends among them.

Be aware.
Many kids will already know each other, and there will be cliques – established groups of friends with common interests and personalities. There may be groups of “mean girls” or “thugs” or whatever – people you want to avoid for a while. You don’t want to judge them, because they may be very nice people! Clearly, you want to stay away from the types of kids who are in gangs and involved in criminal activities. Be yourself! Be strong!  Don’t try to please others if it doesn't please you.

Choose well.
Like it or not, you become like the people you hang out with. Your friends are going to influence your behavior, so choose those who will be a positive influence!  Ask yourself these questions when you select your friends: Will they lift me up or drag me down?  Will spending time with them help me to become my best self? Will I be happier after spending time with them? Can I trust them with my dreams and goals?  If not, find friends who will.

Remember: when it comes to friends, go for quality over quantity.

Reward Dinner for Students!

Last night, students and tutors from the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville celebrated much deserved success for 4th quarter mid-term achievements.

These students were issued a challenge after 3rd quarter report cards to finish the school year strong! They were incented to have all grades at a C or above by mid term and if they did, they would be treated to a celebration dinner at the Red Elephant!  These students rose to the challenge and worked hard to have their assignments in and their grades up to par!  They checked Grade Portal regularly, learned how to ask their teachers to get their grades posted in a timely fashion, and made sure to have their planners filled in so they could keep up with assignments.

We are confident these students will continue these practices for the next couple of weeks and come home with a great report card when school is out! This dinner was a great celebration of their efforts and we congratulate each and every one of them!  #tutoringclubjax  #redelephant

Spring Sports and Academics

Many schools are currently into Spring Sports, which is very exciting for students and athletes! As a matter of fact, Mandarin High School celebrated numerous sport teams at a pep rally this morning, including lacrosse, baseball, softball, and tennis, among others!Sometimes it becomes difficult for students to maintain the rigor of after school practices with the demands of their studies.  And responsible coaches do hold athletes accountable for keeping up their grades in order to participate.

If you find yourself in this situation, the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville can help.  Call us at 268-8556 to schedule a consultation! #tutoringclubjax #teamsideline #mandarinathletics

Preparing for Winter Break

Just 5 more school days until Winter Break! Parents, students, and all of us here at the Tutoring Club are looking forward to some time off and enjoying our families and friends!

While that is VERY exciting, take these last few days at school to make sure all of your assignments are caught up! It's a great time to log on to the Grade Portal and make sure anything that is "missing" makes it to school.

Also, if you can use your time over the break to do a project, make sure you have all the criteria before next Thursday! Take the rubric home and work just a little bit on a few days to complete your project.  That way, when you get back in January, you aren't scrambling to do the research, or get the materials, etc.  It makes for a GREAT start to the New Year!

Repeating a grade level in school

In our constant research on education trends, we came across this statistic:

6% of kids age 6-11 repeat at least one grade in school; 11% of kids aged 12-17 repeat at least one grade of school  (http://www.surfnetkids.com/backtoschool/222/back-to-school-fun-facts/).

There are a number of things that contribute to this such as regular attendance, maturity, and study habits.  But one huge contributing factor to this statistic is these kids tend to miss some early foundational skills but advance anyway, then get to a point in subsequent years that they cannot move on without that skill.  At the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville, our diagnostic evaluation picks up on these skill gaps right away.  We are able to customize a learning plan for your student that addresses missing skills and catches them up to the desired grade level!

If you notice that your child is struggling, we encourage you to call us right away at 268-8556 and let us help so your child does not end up getting held back a grade in school!

School Orientation Schedules

Schools in Jacksonville are preparing for opening day!  Parents of middle school and high school students, take the time to look at your child's school website to get the Orientation schedule.  If you can work it out, try to attend this important session with your child.  The main benefit of Orientation is to avoid stress the first day of school.  By attending Orientation, students are able to get their schedule, apply for parking, obtain a locker, get their ID photo taken, see a few friends, and walk around the campus.  This is particularly important if your child is attending a new school! The first day of school can be crowded and hectic and it helps to know your way around in advance!

Schedules are probably the most important takeaway from Orientation.  Students like to immediately see which of their friends may be in the same class with them!  More practically, it should be an early indicator for you and your child to determine the workload and effort required to make good grades for the upcoming school year.

If your child's schedule appears daunting, take heart!  We are your support and the best choice for tutoring in Jacksonville!  We have highly educated and skilled tutors at the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville.  We can help with advanced math, science, and English classes.  We offer a Study Skills curriculum that includes goal setting, essay writing , research methods, note-taking techniques, and test-preparation strategies.  Skills that will help train your student how to be organized and how to focus on achievement.

Call us at 904-268-8556 to see how we can be an amazing resource for your child this year!
