One of the most anticipated events in the Mandarin community is the Annual Relay for Life event held at Mandarin High School. This year's event will be on April 30th from noon to midnight and will include approximately 30 teams who will be selling items for their fundraising, food, bouncy houses, DJ, drinks, the luminaria ceremony and more!
Cancer has touched many in our community and even several here at the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville. To walk with a child through a journey where a parent or loved one is dealing with cancer is heart-wrenching. We are encouraging as many of you who can to make plans to attend this event and give to help get one step closer to a cure!
At the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville, we focus on your whole child to improve academics, build character and instill confidence. Call us at (904) 268-8556 to discuss how we can help your child --- You can subscribe to our blog by providing your email address in the space below.

Great Opportunity to Get Books!
Who can resist this opportunity? Starting today, you can get some great savings on Books, CDs and DVDs! You should check this out and take advantage of the opportunity to stock up on your personal collection of relevant books for you and your kids.
At the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville, we encourage parents to read to their children for 10 minutes a day and ask them 3 questions. Then have your child to read to you for 10 minutes and ask you 3 questions. This is one of the most effective ways you can help your child improve their comprehension capabilities. This exercise is good for kids of all ages and grades!

Spring Break 2015 Ideas
Spring Break is fast approaching, the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville will be closed, and we have been looking for things to do with kids and teens in our community!
If the weather is nice and warm, an obvious choice is to have beach or river outings. We are so fortunate to live in a city that has these destinations for picnics, swimming, etc. and there are a number of beautiful parks to visit as well.
For more moderate weather, that may be a little too cool for the water, you can visit CattyShack, the Alligator Farm, or a tour in St. Augustine.
If the weather is cold or rainy, then indoor venues may be an option. Be on the lookout for matinee or special pricing at the movies, MOSH, or the Art Museum.
Of course, your family may be planning to go out of town for a little rest and relaxation together.
Whatever your plans, enjoy the time off. Encourage the older kids to take advantage of extra time to catch up on any assignments they are behind on, or know they have upcoming! It's much less stress to take care of things when you have a little extra time. #tutoringclubjax

Hot, Fresh, Now, and FREE!
You know, at the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville, we like to keep you informed on community events! And who doesn't like a FREE KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUT??
The indulgent doughnut chain has picked a very consumer-friendly way to celebrate the opening of its 1,000th store — free doughnuts. Specifically, one free, Original Glazed doughnut to the first 1,000 guests at every participating store. There's no catch — no purchase required. (The promotion is not available at Krispy Kreme grocery or wholesale locations.)
"We are looking forward to sharing this joyful occasion with the millions of fans who enjoy our products in countries around the world," said CEO Tony Thompson, in a statement. That 1,000th store is opening in Kansas City, KS. It won't cost you any money — unless you purchase a coffee with it — but the Original Glazed doughnut will cost you some calories: 190, according to the Krispy Kreme website. It also has 21 grams of carbohydrates; 11 grams of fat; 7 milligrams of sodium and 10 grams of sugar. Not to forget: 1 gram of dietary fiber.
Anything with fiber is good for you, right?? Enjoy!! #tutoringclubjax

This teacher said "I don't believe in 'I can't'!"
Read this story about a teacher - a Band Director - that went an extra mile for her student. At the Tutoring Club of Jacksonville, we know this impact that positive reinforcement, and a genuine interest in our students' lives makes. We pulled this story from 11Alive.com:
SWANVILLE, Minn. – As his body weakened from a muscle disease, Ethan Och knew the time had come.
He told his music teacher he'd have to give up his favorite school activity. "I was lagging behind," says Ethan. "And they were going ahead and there was no way for me to catch up with them."
His teacher, Gina Christopherson, remembers the day Ethan broke the news. "He said I really hate to do this, but I have to quit band." If Ethan expected to ride his wheelchair into the band sunset, he picked the wrong director. "I don't believe in 'I can't,'" says Mrs. Christopherson.
Today Ethan is back in the percussion section, drumming on an iPad hooked to an amplifier. Mrs. Christopherson got the idea from Ethan himself, the day she saw him playing with a drum app on his smartphone. "My first day digging through iTunes I downloaded 75 different apps," Mrs. Christopherson says. Several of those apps are now loaded on an iPad from the school's special education department, giving Ethan an assortment of drums, cymbals and a keyboard, he plays with his fingers.
"Exactly the same as his classmates," says Mrs. Christopherson, "just a different mode." Not all band directors felt that way. Mrs. Christopherson says it took some convincing before the Minnesota State High School League agreed that Ethan's amplified music would be allowed in band competitions. But that was only one of the hurdles. When marching band season came Ethan cleared another, thanks to a baby stroller and a car battery that kept his amplifier powered as he rolled along with the Swanville High School band. "I could not understand how that would work," says Ethan. He's learned since not to doubt his music teacher. "In her mind anything's possible," he says.
That includes Ethan's upcoming bus trip to New York City with the rest of the band. To be sure, Ethan's need for 24 hour nursing care presented an obstacle, but Mrs. Christopherson wasn't going let that stand in the way either. An online fundraiser to help cover travel expenses for two nurses raised the needed $1200 in less than a day. "He's part of the team, you don't leave somebody behind," Mrs. Christopherson says.
Ethan's parents know few band directors would go to such lengths. "You have those people that see barriers when they look at things, and those who see doors," says Stephanie Och, Ethan's mom.
Mrs. Christopherson sees the entire Swanville community benefiting from Ethan's iPad drumming. "It's his success and we get to celebrate it too," she says.

Old Schoolhouse gets a new home!
On January 13th, a very important piece of Mandarin's history took up a new residence at Walter Jones Park. A 600 square feet schoolhouse, built in 1889, was originally built for the children of freed Civil War slaves.
In an article written by Dan Scanlon for Jacksonville.com, he quotes a source as saying:
“This is a visible sign of the history of this area and the stories of black education. We don’t have many things you can touch and feel that really convey the struggles of that post-Civil War era,” Droege said. “… It is a gem, it really is. And when you think that Mandarin was 75 percent black after the Civil War, this allows us to tell that part of our history.”
At its new location, the schoolhouse will get some upgrades before tours will open, including some structural improvements, a new handicapped ramp and a new sidewalk. Tutoring Club of Jacksonville is very excited to to have this piece of history in our community for all to see!

Clothes Closet for Students in Need
DID YOU KNOW?
With the simple cutting of a ribbon, Duval County Public Schools and Dignity U Wear hope to reduce the number of students in need of clothing. The district serves nearly 700 homeless students and thousands more who are considered low-income. Unfortunately, these numbers grow everyday. Thanks to an expanded partnership between Duval County Public Schools and Dignity U Wear, there is now a better way to serve local school children in need. After many years of providing clothing for low-income children in the school system on a case-by-case basis, Dignity U Wear, in cooperation with Duval County Public Schools, has established a district-wide, centrally-located “New Clothes Closet” that will be exclusively accessible to educators, school social workers and guidance counselors, to provide brand new clothing to underserved, at-risk school children. Social workers will have direct access to pants, shirts, uniforms, jeans, socks, underwear and other school-appropriate clothing for children.
What an awesome service for our students in need!

International Walk to School Day
A couple of weeks ago was the official International Walk to School Day - and across the country, millions of children, parents, teachers and health advocates hit the streets!
This year, 60 schools in Duval County participated in the ann...ual event and participants promoted pedestrian safety and advocated for safer walking environments for students.
However, as recently as yesterday, here in Jacksonville, a student was hit and critically injured while walking to school.
This is another plea for all people to help pay attention to walking students and pedestrians! Stay off the phone! Be extra alert! Watch for bus stops! Pay attention to crossing guards and safety patrol! Help keep our students safe!

Jaguars get First Win of the Season!
It was a sweet victory for the Jacksonville Jaguars yesterday, over the Cleveland Browns. A deciding win, for a home-town crowd! Excitement was definitely in the air!
Perhaps sweeter than the victory though, is the example our head coach and team have been to the kids and youth of this city over the past several weeks as they were losing. We are so impressed by the behaviors this organization has publicly modeled for all of us. It is important to have a team that is cognizant about their leadership and public persona role to this, their home town. We have a lot to boast about from the coach's leadership, to the conduct of the players in general. They are not haughty, nasty, or show-boaters. The are community-minded and actively involved in our city, and they want to deliver on wins for us!
So Jacksonville Jaguars - hats off you to you! Keep your drive, keep your focus, and keep up the hard work! Thank you for being positive role models for our students here at The Tutoring Club of Jacksonville!

Safety for our Kids - at the bus stop and beyond
We weren't planning to blog about this topic today, but breaking news just came across social media, so we wanted to highlight this issue in case it's not top of mind!
Our world can be a dangerous place and it's up to all of us to help protect our children. Read this article via the link below (the picture is NOT associated with the article):
http://www.news4jax.com/news/suspicious-white-van-spotted-3-times-near-school-bus-stops/27739812?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
Please be diligent, and watch out for ALL children! Teach kids to be aware of their surroundings. Make sure they travel in groups, not alone. Tell them how to communicate with someone if they sense there is a problem. They need to be safe from all kinds of harmful and dangerous situations, and this situation is unfortunately only one of many they may face.
Don't be afraid or embarrassed to have frank discussions with your kids. They need our guidance!
