On January 13th, a very important piece of Mandarin's history took up a new residence at Walter Jones Park. A 600 square feet schoolhouse, built in 1889, was originally built for the children of freed Civil War slaves.
In an article written by Dan Scanlon for Jacksonville.com, he quotes a source as saying:
“This is a visible sign of the history of this area and the stories of black education. We don’t have many things you can touch and feel that really convey the struggles of that post-Civil War era,” Droege said. “… It is a gem, it really is. And when you think that Mandarin was 75 percent black after the Civil War, this allows us to tell that part of our history.”
At its new location, the schoolhouse will get some upgrades before tours will open, including some structural improvements, a new handicapped ramp and a new sidewalk. Tutoring Club of Jacksonville is very excited to to have this piece of history in our community for all to see!
